The medical benefits of marijuana are widely known. It can be used in the treatment of both acute and chronic diseases.

A new groundbreaking medical study showed that all 30 participants with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), had improved sleep and concentration as well as decreased impulsivity after taking medicinal cannabis. All of these patients said that they had limited success with conventional treatments with Adderall and Ritalin.

Majority of the participants, or exactly 22, have chosen to replace their formerly prescribed drugs with marijuana, in order to deal with their symptoms.

Although this is not a big group of participants, it still points out to the benefits of medicinal marijuana in the treatment of ADHD.

The cannabinoidologist, Dr. David Bearman, explains that cannabis seems to treat ADHD and ADD by increasing the dopamine availability. It provides the same effect but it has a different mechanism of action than stimulants such as dexedrine amphetamine and Ritalin. The mechanism of action of these stimulants is binding to the dopamine and interfering with the dopamine’s metabolic breakdown.

In fact, cannabinoids found in marijuana may improve the shortages of dopamine in the brain of ADHD patients. Currently, only California and Colorado states allow prescription of medicinal marijuana for the treatment of ADHD. We hope that further similar studies will influence more states to allow this way of ADHD treatment.
