Costco Says NO to GMO Salmon

Costco is now officially on the list of other retail giants which don’t plant to sell this GMO fish.

The Associated Press and Seattle Times report the company doesn’t intend to sell GMO salmon now. With this statement, they join the list of retailers which refuse to sell GMO salmon regardless of the fact that FDA approved it for human consumption Thursday.

The warehouse store chain reported Friday:

“Even though the Federal Food and Drug Administration has approved the sale of this genetically modified fish, Costco has neither sold nor will start to sell it.”

This GMO fish is AquAdvantage Salmon which grows twice as fast as the regular salmon. Still, the FDA reported its nutritional profile doesn’t have biologically relevant differences with that of the farm-raised Atlantic salmon.

This genetically modified salmon was engineered by AquaBounty – a company based in Massachusetts. They reported the AquAdvantage Salmon could be available in grocery stores in about 2 years.

What’s more, the Food and Drug Administration states the law doesn’t demand the salmon to be labeled as engineered when it hits the store shelves.

They explain that this is due to the lack of material differences between a regular and an engineered salmon. Nevertheless, they also set guidelines for companies that want to label the salmon.

Public Concerns about AquAdvantage Salmon

Critics have named the salmon “Frankenfish” and they have pressured retailers to refuse its sale. Their biggest concerns are the potential human allergies it can cause, as well as the possible decimation of the population of normal salmon if it escapes into the wild.

Besides Costco, other retailers who don’t sell AquAdvantage Salmon are Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Kroger. We applaud all of these companies who decided to stand up for our health.

Protestors urged this retail giant to make a similar pledge back in June.
